Boomkat Product Review:
Reissue of Shawn O’Sullivan (Civil Duty) and co’s debut LP as Led Er Est, Dust On Common - a strong session of wry redraws of minimal new wave, originally for Wierd Records and now on Mannequin, nearly ten years later.
As part of the Wierd Records cabal and the general milieu of labels such as Veronica Vasicka’s Minimal Wave around the end of the ‘00s, Led Er Est arguably established parameters for the new New Wave of artists dealing with subterranean early ‘80s styles; presenting a potently reduced recreation of the original thing, locked with the kind of rictus machine grooves which would crop up in later techno produce from Shawn O’Sullivan, affixed to cold, poised vocals that are less an exercise in stylish appropriation and more to do with executing something that meant something to them compared with the sorry state of indie-pop, techno and rock around that time.
Some proper zingers in here. Get your yellow stuff in and chew the night away.
