Boomkat Product Review:
Young bring up Sampha’s 2nd EP of scalp-tingling UK soul for a necessary 10 year anniversary reissue reminder of his timeless brilliance
Along with his early guest spots and collaborations on records by The xx, Jessie Ware, Lil Silva, Koreless and SBTRKT, 2013’s ‘Dual EP’ was among the key records that affirmed Sampha’s place on the UK’s modern soul map. Since then his work has only grown in stature via work with Drake, FKA Twigs, Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Solange, Actress, Laura Groves and Travis Scott (we could go on for ages), and accolades including the Mercury Music Prize for his debut LP ‘Process’ (not to mention BRIT and Grammy nominations) and critical acclaim for 2023’s ‘Laihai’ album.
That all makes this reissue of his early solo work all the more crucial for its timely reminder of the artist stripped back to fundamentals, just dripping in proustian ohrwurms and vibes for days between the modern blooz-soul of ‘Demons’, the late night nugget ‘Beneath the Tree’, and of course his belting ballad ‘Indecision’. With the benefit of hindsight, the early 2010s really was a golden era.
