Self-styled "sound builder" Albert van Abbe joins forces with Olaf Bender, aka Byetone, on their VAxBY debut "DUAL", a grinding and almost cheeky remodeling of Raster's precise, iced minimalism.
Dutch artist van Abbe - who has recorded as Datasmok and The Pulse Projects, and contributed to collaborative projects Harpoen and live acid duo Penik Ettek - has been working in electronic music for two decades, notching up releases on SUPERPANG, Echocord and Shtum. Alongside Bender, he attempts to balance the serendipitous nature of live recording with the intricate process of studio editing.
The duo took a real-time" approach to the recording of "DUAL' in an attempt to break free from their genre's inherent cold, planned meticulousness. The result is a more freewheeling sound, best expressed on tracks like 'I think this part is a bit boring', a slippery garage-like track that's a million miles from its title. 'When we had a coffee or pizza together' is even better, evoking the DIY scene's gristly post-Panasonic vibing as much as it does Bender's frosted microscopic sculptures.
