Boomkat Product Review:
'Drones' compiles all three volumes - 'Violin', 'Viola', & 'Piano' - of the most recent series by arranger and composer extraordinaire, Nico Muhly. We'd best let Nico explain the concept: "I started writing the Drones pieces as a method of developing harmonic ideas over a static structure. The idea is something not unlike singing along with one's vacuum cleaner, or with the subtle but constant humming found in most dwelling-places. We surround ourselves with constant noise, and the Drones pieces are an attempt to honor these drones and stylize them." With that in mind we find him working with Bruce Brubaker on the five part cycle of 'Piano', and again on 'Viola' accompanied by the measured poise of Nadia Sirota's strings, while 'Violin' features Finnish player Pekka Kuusisto's jagged tones complimented by Muhly's keys. As with his catalogue so far, it's yet another refreshing and engagingly intelligent suite from this superb young composer.
