Boomkat Product Review:
Instrumental band Desertshore release their debut full-length via Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde label. Principally a trio, the band comprises keyboardist Chris Connolly, drummer Dave Muench and guitarist Phil Carney, who has played with both Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon. A number of additional players show up for these sessions, most notably Mark Kozelek himself, who contributes additional guitar parts. The tone of the album shifts between a number of different styles - from slowcore country to Middle-Eastern modal sequences - along the way calling upon the advanced, mellifluous post-rock of 'The Town Alight', the Western blues of 'Mojave Mirage' and the florid acoustic picking of 'Gwynnedd' or the Kozelek-penned 'Koko'. There's a wonderfully consistent level of musicianship to all this, and something in the production style ensures that the album stays within the spectrally graceful aesthetics of the Caldo Verde canon. Recommended.
