Boomkat Product Review:
A new solo album from Om/Grails member Emil Amos, who reportedly immersed himself in books about Cold War espionage and '70s Italian horror soundtracks for inspiration. The resultant long-player took two years to piece together from late night improv sessions, taking on a sound that most closely resembles the shadowy layers that make up his Grails work. Amos' vocal presence adds a further dimension, drawing these soundscapes into the realm of more conventional songwriting on haunted, doomy Americana jaunts like 'Burrow Away' and 'More Mind Briars', which blends Neil Young inspired melodies with richly detailed, highly atmospheric production. The instrumental sequences are pretty great too, particularly the gothic blues of 'Dat Miner's Theme', whose peculiar found-sound electronic elements and shortwave drifts bring an air of voyeuristic mystery the piece.
