Boomkat Product Review:
Deepest Detroit soul and hi-tech funk pearls from 1989 resurface for the first time, legit licensed from its producer, Art Forest’s Wildboy Records for facsimile reissue - big RIYL Inner City, Paula Abdul, heavy ‘80s soul
Indelibly etched on the blues party consciousness by Shawn Pittman’s angelic vocal, ‘Dreams’ was a staple of late night soirées and radio, but has also long remained hard-to-obtain, until now. This full fat reissue revives the vibe for new bodies in need, throwing down the original slow jam, iced with Shawn’s glyding vocal and swanging around overproof bassline, to lip-biting effect. The remix dials up the atmosphere with a slower groove streaked by more vaporous FX, before the B-side switches up entirely to a sort of Prince-inspired, hi-tech Detroit funk that better betrays producer Art Forest’s more typical, tuffer techno-soul style, found evened out to club-twanging form on the ‘Extended Bass-ment Club Mix’. If you’re feeling it, run check Forest’s other projects.
