Dream of Snakes
Inspired by hikes in the Irish countryside, 'Dream of Snakes' augments Uruguayan producer Lila Tirando a Violeta's hyperactive club variations with airlock'd sonics from SVBKVLT's Sideproject, Lighght, JQ, IMAABS and Other Islands.
Her last two albums (2022's NAAFI club-ambient tome 'Desire Path' and the Hyperdub-released 'Accela') were heavily conceptual, so Lila took a breather when she relocated from the Netherlands to Ireland in 2023, letting her daily physical and emotional experiences inform the music she was writing. And it's led to some of her most inventive, eccentric productions to date; there's not the over-arching thematic rigidity that leveled its predecessors, but 'Dream of Snakes' is unpredictable and urgent, packed with ideas that scrape some of the sweat and stale beer off the dancefloor.
Icelandic trio Sideproject show up to add some of their fabled rhythmic alchemy to 'Ostrich/Ñandú', muddling time-fluxed polyrhythms with Lila's woodwind wonks, vocal chants and skittered post-IDM steel drum trills. And Lila's just as convincing when she goes it alone on the aluminium-brushed Latinate 'ardkore fantasy 'Retumba en tu Piel' and 'Rest & Relaxation', a Jersey-slanted electro/post-punk fusion that gets a neck snapped remix from IMAABS and Other Islands. Irish producer Lighght mucks in on the µ-Ziq-esque 'Heavy is the Soul', that's stripped back and focused by G3 to lead us out.
