Boomkat Product Review:
Don’t DJ, Laksa, and Flore rework highlights from the debut album by Tunisian newcomer Azu Tiwaline, following her ace summer 2020 shot on Pev’s Livity Sound
On one for the hard drum nuts, all three remixers focus on the North African percussive traditions key to Tiwaline’s style, while also neatly expanding and augmenting her atmospheric contents.
Don’t DJ exemplifies the aesthetic with a slow building 11 minute remix of ‘Until The End’ gradually tunnelling from furtively filtered voices and drums into a steeply hypnotic churn and portent drone. Laksa’s take on ‘Izen Zaren’ is more direct and whipsmart in a vintage Shackleton or Muslimgauze style update for UKB needs, and french producer Flore locks ‘Berbeka’ to a steadier, if offset techno ballast layered with possessed wind and gloaming pads to more widescreen appeal.
