Holiest footwork functions by the legendary one back again just shy of its 10th (jeeeeez!) anniversary, and reminding those who need it of Rashad’s influential genius. R.I.P. my G
‘Double Cup’ revolves the Chicago dynamo’s best work, bar none, scything thru classic soul samples with a lip-bitingly strong discipline and funk flow that echoes the OG innovations of ’80s house and ‘90s ghetto tech in his own way. Naturally it’s inspired by the footwork godfather RP Boo, but DJ Rashad augments that bare boned funk with a phalanx of close collaborators - Teklife dons Spinn, Taso, DJ Phil, Earl, Manny, and UK’s Addison Groove - and, more crucially, a bang up-for-it thrust that those who met him will attest was part of his personality, and couldn’t help but bleed thru into his music.
It’s pure southside Chi pressure, meshing featherlight chords with ruggedest subs and snares and typewriter ticks - all thickly stewed with soul samples that have made it so enduring ever since. Rashad would pass away well before his time in 2014, only just days after performing his last show here in Manchester, where his spirit surely lives on in hearts and feet that have long danced to a Chicago pulse. ‘Double Cup’ is the strongest testament to his legacy - ever-ready for new disciples.
