Boomkat Product Review:
Cassy commits her debut album of signature, sensuous house minimalism and soulful vocals to AUS Music after more than ten years of production and DJ work, and even more as a singer since the early ‘00s.
This decade so far has been dry for new Cassy gear after leaving us with some real standouts of the ‘00s scene such as A Poem For You or her string of supple grooves for Perlon and the pivotal Panorama Bar 01 DJ mix.
But Donna makes up for her absence, rolling out 12 considerately trim, infectiously slinky and memorably sexy grooves that remind us what we cared about in her earlier work, and that scene in a wider sense, before it became all “elite” parties and gym bunnies bozing out in shit face paint (Ibiza, festivals, SMH).
She’s still got a real knack for nagging hooks, the kind that stay with you after the moment has passed, as with feathered chords and vocal quirks of Keep Trying, in the louche swing of Back, and the jazzy refrain of All I Do, whilst elsewhere she tests out other tempos and patterns with quiet success in the dusted soul of Strange Relationship, and the sassy guitar downstrokes of You Gotta Give.
