Boomkat Product Review:
Wickedly loose, frayed, yet classy grooves from Newcastle’s Andrew Scott a.k.a. NY*AK and his pals, Mark Hand, Misumami, and Ian Blevins.
NY*AK’s analog hardware productions have a swerve and guile well suited to ‘floors from Detroit to London and are understandably favoured by the likes of Moodymann, Seven Davis Jr. and Gilles Peterson.
A-side he rolls out the light-diffusing chord warble and sloppy disco swang of Xager feat. Ian Blevins beside the debonaire beatdown play, Shadow featuring louche lounge vocals by Misumami.
Dollar opens the B-side at a lowlit tilt, all woody drums and hushed chords hitting a blue downstroke with scatty jazz stabs before rubbing out the kind of kinky boogie that would make Floating Points blush, but we’d like to hear more on the dubbed-out, slinky flex of closer Goodbye.
