Boomkat Product Review:
**This is the digital edition, the vinyl version contains 8 selected tracks** UK house heroine Maya Jane Coles has become a massive deal over the past couple of years: the fact that she's been put in charge of helming a DJ-Kicks comp - an honour that usually falls to much longer established artists - is testament to this. Its cleverly blended 21 tracks together represent a fine distillation of her swaggering, techy house sound, one informed by bass music but not overwhelmed by it; it moves effortlessly from the deeper styles of Adam Stacks, Standard Fair and Virgo Four (as remixed by Caribou) to riffier, gnarlier tackle like Bozzwell's evil 'In My Cocoon'. Highlights come in the shape of Last Magpie's hoovering garage-tech monster 'Last Magpie', T. Williams' acid update 'Analog Tour', Sigward's lo-fi basement thumper 'Nuerd' and Jimmy Edgar's epic, drugged-out fix of Kris Wadsworth's 'Mainline'; oh and MJC's own DJ-Kicks exclusive, 'Not Listening' is rudely effective too. If you're looking for a cool snapshot of forward-thinking 4/4 that resists the obvious anthems, this is a must.
