Boomkat Product Review:
Milan's Mannequin rescue 13 tracks of spiky darkwave from Siena, Tuscany's Lord Arthur Savile's Crime aka L.A.S's Crime. Between forming in 1984 and their final recordings in 1989, Sandro Marchetti (vocals, synthesizer, programming) and Maria Elena Brogi (vocals, synthesizers) produced five demo tapes and one studio album, at Sound City, Florence, all of which went pretty much unnoticed until their music began circulating on the internet nearly 25 years later. 'Disphoria 1985-1989' affords a vivid window into the lead-hearted mood of late '80s European darkwave, progressively getting faster, more unhinged and urgent over its duration as the sulphur-fuelled drum slaves and nervy arpeggios succumb to the channelled mania of their masters. It's a sound which has clearly fed forward into some of today's best revivalist stuff and the stranger end of the neo-synth spectrum, from the rapid-fire darkwave of Martial Canterel and Xeno & Oaklander to the singular pop of Gary War. Recommended!
