Boomkat Product Review:
Immense 33-track 2CD compilation charting the birth of punk attitude through the music of Suicide, Gene Vincent, T Rex, Sun Ra, MC5, The Stooges, New York Dolls and many more. It was compiled by music scribe and authority on music, Kris Needs, who also provides an extensive 76-page perfect-bound book, and appears on the same label that assembled the ace 'Bustin' Out' compilation of New Wave to New Beat classics, so you're basically in very good hands for this pre-Punk 101. The key to the comp is in the word "Attitude" giving Kris license to pick some incredibly diverse music which shares the distinct traits of being unconventional, often aggressive and always compelling. Most notably, the comp includes the ultra-rare Hollywood Brats cover of The Kinks 'I Needs You', next to timeless classics such as The Monks 'I Hate You' and a live version of MC5's 'Rocket Reducer No. 62' jostling for space with The Last Poets 'On The Subway', Can's 'Outside My Door', Red Krayola's 'Hurricane Fighter Plane' and Culture's 'Two Sevens Clash'. Education through entertainment is always effective, never more so than here. TIP!
