did you mean: irish, vol. 2
ZULI and Rama's irsh label spreads its wings on this crucial second comp, investigating the space between the dancefloor and the afters with future-facing deployments from ABADIR, El Kontessa, Assyouti, 1127, Azzouni, QOW, Ismael and more.
irsh started life as a video series in Cairo, where ZULI and Rama would film themselves and their friends jamming at home. But since its inception, it's grown significantly; the video series gave birth to the first compilation, released when COVID lockdown stalled gatherings in 2020, and when the duo relocated to Berlin, irsh bloomed into a proper clubnight - one of the German capital's most nourishing. 'did you mean: irish. vol.2' appeared in 2022, and features a spread of material from some of the label's friends and collaborators. And although bass-heavy dancefloor mutations are at the root, this one spirals into deeper, more esoteric territory.
Opener 'Siteh' from Azzouni, a member of Cairo A/V collective MOSHTRQ, is a low-key sludge rap experiment featuring Ramallah's Dakn on vocals, who slurs elastically in Arabic over dusty chopped breaks, foley dings and pinprick synths. The brilliant 1127 - who just released 'ض' on the Nashazphone label - turns in a typically alien alloy of stuttered percussion, deep bass and rough, ghosted textures, while QOW goes fully horizontal on 'Keteer', a prelude to last year's 'ElMosameh Sherine' that's peak floatation tank ambience. There's even an audio feed from ABADIR and Onsy's A/V collaboration (as 0N4B) 'Cybernetic Emptiness', that drowns its sparse kick thuds in chirping computerized noise and swimmy pads.
And if you're looking for beat-heavy gear there's plenty for the feet, too. ABADIR's cybernetic grime deviation 'Kabbut' is a clear high point, featuring ZULI and 3Phaz on additional production, and Berlin-based DJ/producer Assyouti comes correct on 'Null', chopping timestretched breaks into a lattice of pacy kicks, distortions and siren calls. Veteran Lebanese producer Liliane Chlela goes deep and dark on 'Swordfish', following up on the promise of 2021's ace 'Safala', and Egyptian producer Ashrar suspends pneumatic kicks, metallic crashes and quivering hand drum rolls in space on 'Granulosis', splitting the difference. If you want a porthole to the future, cop this immediately.
