Boomkat Product Review:
Back in stock! Bill Callahan is a lucky guy, I think that much is clear - not only is he the other half of sultry string-plucking seductress Joanna Newsom but he's bl*ody talented to boot, if I wasn't such a Smog devotee I'd really have to kill him, as it stands I'd rather listen to this latest single. The first thing I have to say is there's been a name change, now for some reason he's dropped the long-standing Smog moniker and uses his own name - I guess it worked for his girlfriend. Then again, this material is notably removed from the windswept melancholia of Smog, Callahan is upbeat about life and why shouldn't he be? From the bling of the diamond-covered sleeve you know that this is a different side to Callahan, and he seems right at home making grandiose country-tinged pop rock. Sitting somewhere between the recent PG Six album and classic period Smog what we have here is a revelatory change of direction and an exciting taster of Callahan's forthcoming album. The exclusive B-Side 'Taken' is equally as enthralling and of course can only be found on this lovely little release. A stunning single, Drag City are on fire right now.
