Astral Industries harbour the debut of gently lysergic ambience from Samuel Van Dijk & Rasmus Hedlund’s Dialog - over an hour of expansive synthesis riddled with cosmic noise.
Dialog’s eponymous, maiden voyage into deep ambient zones renders a single, 63min work in four parts that glide over the senses with lushest effect. Drawing on mutual backgrounds in techno and electronic music sound design, their slow-paced ‘Dialog’ arrives at a wordless conclusion flush with dynamic, amorphous surface details that lure you into unfathomable spatialisation. Repeat listens will reward the ardent ambient traveller with the revelation of microscopic artefacts of field recordings embedded in their music’s expanses, and to our UK ears, a mix of pharmaceutical Dutch engineering for the mind spliced with a certain Finnish chilliness that feels fresh as freezer stored acid.
Van Dijk & Hedlund’s first collaboration lucidly speaks to a sort of shared consciousness cultivated by their respective decades spent with machines in isolation. Conversing in a shared language of abstract impressionist tones and textures, their patient pathos manifests through sensitive strokes of elemental electronics inspired by nature and guided by instinct. On side A they bob on oceanic waves of bass radiance, with pads opening out into quietly glorious harmonics, before side B turns more overcast, weather fronts occluding distant voices carried over vast distance. There’s a cooler send of resolve to side C’s headier pressure drop and notably more arid conditions, shoring up in the solemn introspect of side D.
