Crushing but heady doom metal inspired by cult co-leader Ma Ananda Sheela (Wild Wild Country), from Petra Haden and her former Goatsnake & Sunn 0))) collaborator Greg Anderson.
Charting a new direction for Greg Anderson project The Lord after the death metal brutalism of ‘Forest Nocturne’ (2020), his follow-up ropes in violinist/vocalist Haden for an alluring alloy of symphonic and doom metals laced with heavy Indian classical influence. Haden is staged in six sonorous parts against Anderson’s backdrops of billowing axe overtones and incense smoke to regale a wordless take on the life of Ma Anand Sheela, notorious murderer and fierce henchwoman for Osho, the disgraced guru whose Rajneeshpuram ashram community in Wasco County, OR, and their bioterror attacks on local salad bars, have been subject of multiple TV documentaries and even a feature film on Sheela.
Greg Anderson comments on the album, "I'm extremely happy with the recordings we made together. Petra's vocals bring a whole new dimension to the heaviness,“ and Petra Haden comments, “It was so much fun getting to play and sing on SUNN O)))’s album ØØ Void. 20 years later, I’m on stage with them at The Mayan Theater in Los Angeles singing and playing on the encore. I was in heaven! After the show, Greg and I talked about working on more music together. When I heard his ideas, I already had melodies in my head. I recorded some ideas at home and it developed from there. Greg is a really deep listener and he’s so much fun to work with. Getting to collaborate with Greg reminds me why I love to sing and improvise. I feel free and happy. That’s what music is all about."
The results tread a fine line between Sunn 0)))’s Thor-sized axe chops and more seductive, skilled vocal glossolalia. Trading on this schism of heaviness and light, they conure images of phantasmic occult in its title piece, while Haden is nearly consumed by Anderson’s mauling claws in ‘Rise to Diminish’ and the stone faced riffage of 12 minute centrepiece ‘What Lies Behind Us Lies Buried Because it is Dead.’ Haden is however given her moment to shine in the ecstasies of ‘Ma Anand Sheela’ and swirling atop ‘Yaman’, and they come together in staggering form on ‘The End of Absence.’
