Desktop Robotics & Feelings on a Screen (25th Anniversary Edition)
Gianluigi Di Constanzo celebrates 25 years of his best-loved EPs as Bochum Welt, two short sets of "Selected Ambient Works"-influenced electronics that drizzle minor-key synth melodies over malfunctioning electro beats. Quietly influential stuff for fans of early Rephlex, Planet Mu, Warp et al - includes remixes from Dopplereffekt's Heinrich Mueller and Like A Tim.
Both "Desktop Robotics" and "Feelings on a Screen" were initially released by Rephlex in 1997, and while they're not included in their entirety here, the highlights have been fleshed out with additional tracks and weaker moments have been relegated to memory. The title tracks from both EPs ('Desktop Robotics' is a bouncy distorted electro-led banger that's not a million miles from AFX's "Analogue Bubblebath" series, and 'Feelings on a Screen' is a weepy, android anthem) are included as bookends, opening us up to new versions of well-known tracks and a couple of well-placed remixes.
"Desktop Robotics" track 'Hug Me Tight' is turned into 'HMT (202 Mix)', placed next to the "SAWII"-like 'Leafs Brought by the Wind' and a demo version of 'Marylebone' from Di Di Constanzo's 2017 album "April". On the flipside, Heinrich Mueller adds a Drexciyan sparkle to Di Constanzo's 'Saint', and Djax-Up-Beats' Like a Tim tweaks 'Greenwich' into a post-Kraftwerk floor-filler. It's simple, effective material that fully shows why he's such an enduring figure for contemporary electro labels like CPU.
