Outstanding, gothic, Latinate club and ambient tekkerz from Uruguay’s Lila Tirando a Violeta, adding another class notch to CDMX’s Naafi powerhouse.
A real shapeshifter, Lila Tirando a Violeta has carved out a distinctive space between ambient and club paradigms over the past half decade via releases for Dream Catalogue and HKE, and her curation of the Tekres label. She’s also a member of pop/performance art duo A.M.I.G.A. - prominent supporters of LGBTQIA+ rights in South America - and has worked with everyone from Ariel Pink to Nick Léon in the run up to ‘Desire Path’; a 10 track consolidation of her broad palette, twisting tradition and technology into insistently tuff but sensual rhythms with brooding arrangements of synthesised, and real, instruments, vocals, and spirits.
‘Desire Path’ follows her nose for a gothic slant on contemporary and classic Latin styles, finding a darkly sublime sort of atmospheric club pressure in the process. The standout ‘Aguas Violentas’ is a case in point, ft. Verraco’s vox low in the mix over growling Reese bass and bone-swivelling drums that feel like Paul Marmota channelling Nkisi, while the taut, glassy but liquid flow of ‘Cuerpo que Flota’ ft. Nicola Cruz also impresses string new club options along with the simmering intricacies of ‘Tungsten Tears’ and the deep dembow techno hunch of ’Twenty Seven’ ft. Merca Bae & PRJCTN. Factored with its incursions of traditional, global sounds in the almost dabke-like ‘Caminos del Deseo’ and the wickedly possessed sign-off ‘Brief Glimpses of Happiness’, this is another must-check from one of modern electronic music’s most exciting quarters.
