Boomkat Product Review:
Purportedly born on the day Marc Bolan died (no, I don't see the relevance either) Joe Volk offers us eleven concise folk pop ditties to gather the harvest to. With the soft fingerpicked guitar usually associated with Nick Drake or more recently Jose Gonzalez this is an extremely lulling listening experience. Almost the factory definition of 'home listening', it comes as no surprise that king of the genre Adrian Utley of Portishead has produced the record. Of course with that pedigree comes a certain degree of expectation, yet gone are his signature beats and samples and the resulting work is effortlessly restrained and oozes class. Skip straight to 'The Sun Always Rises' for a perfect example of Volk's abilities; spine tingling melodies, gorgeous 'classic' English folk vocal stylings and such simple electronic elements (a drifting pad, disintegrating piano sound); this set's the scene for the rest of the album, and is something I can see myself going back to again and again. 'Derwent Waters Saint' is a real surprise and a gorgeous collection of music - a big recommendation for lazy afternoons and dusty sunsets.
