On the occasion of the reissue of the first GAS album, 'Der Lange Marsch', from 2021, which was previously only available as part of the art exhibition Wolfgang Voigt - Werkschau, is now finally available worldwide.
Like Hansel & Gretel lured by a trail of distant kick drums deep into the Bavarian forests, ‘Der Lange Marsh’ enacts a richly romantic dream sequence of fantasy ambient techno. One should not be surprised to hear elements of Gas classics ‘Zauberberg’, ‘Pop’, ‘Königsforest’ and ‘Rausch’ nestled in its weft of deeply enchanted string loops and deciduous textures that crunch underfoot, but all subtly reframed in a way that feels like a grandfather taking us for a mooch and reminiscing the same old stories in a familiar but ever welcome way, akin to the The Caretaker’s gauzy flashbacks, but with a palpitating bass drum urging listeners deeper into the woods.
Where the original 2021 release suffered some gremlins in the mix, this edition is present and correct as the artist intended. It’s ideally best consumed in the play-thru 67’ piece, which hypnotises with a deeply stealthy subtlety in its modulated bass ambulation and patina of crackle that resembles the crackle of forest floor detritus or drizzle on Goretex. But the magick really bleeds thru in Voigt’s discreetly beautiful mixing tekkerz, diffusing the elements with patient, gauzy depth perception that comes alive with a good soundsystem to impart his vision of dense green foliage shot thru with a play of light and riddled with spirit.
