Boomkat Product Review:
A curveball from Hamburg’s Dial boss, David Lieske a.k.a. Carsten Jost and artist/photographer Robert Kulisek: paying tribute to black metal with ten tracks of sullen percussion and looming atmospheres threaded with gloomy samples.
As with any appropriation of a genre that’s not your usual field, there are always going to be issues of authenticity, and the only way to overcome them is to sound either as true as possible and let others decide how true the results are, or to just treat it with irreverence and humour and make a point of the distance between the object of desire and your own effort.
Unfortunately this does neither, sounding like a manicured, arms-reach homage to the real thing that looks and sounds pretty well done, but ultimately misses the mark.
