Boomkat Product Review:
Brooding takes on the classic early dubstep flex, richly inspired by DMZ and Skream OGs
Coolly riding the 140bpm skank, the four minimalist but heavyweight tracks of ‘Dark Arts’ hearken back to a time before the smoking ban, when the small dank clubs that would play this stuff didn’t even need a smoke machine.
A-side delivers the title tune’s mystic pressure on a halfstep bubble lit up with woozy flutes in early Mala style, before Rider Shafique set ‘Hebrew Flip’ on a shadowy tip recalling early Kode 9 and The Space Ape, but with echoes of drill’s baroque keys. Flipside ‘Hiw We Move’ follows a halfstep hunch reminding Random Trio’s Cyrus or Omen beats, and ‘Binural’ brings co-producer Surreal on board for an itchy, needlepoint stepper.
