DAR DISKU
Luxurious, dancefloor-ripe fusions of Arabic heritage and multicultural cues from Raï, Turkish psych and Bollywood, ambient and Khaleeji disco, by Brit-based, Bahraini duo Dar Disku .
Concocting their own potent brew after years of chopping out edits on their eponymous label, Mazan AlMaskati and Vish Mhatre’s Dar Disku present their first long player of original grooves via the trustworthy Soundway Records Ltd. Their self-titled opus is radiant with a timeless analog production warmth that speak to lifetimes immersed in vintage styles from the SWANA region encompassing South West Asia and North Africaand which has percolated thru the sets of European discos thanks to diggers and connoisseurs such as Finders Keepers’ Andy Votel who’ve been reaching for spicier dancefloor blends, and ultimately the sort of stuff that has fed forward into Dua Lipa’s disco pop, for example.
In the lads’ own words: “Sonically we have tried to capture what time traveling with Dar Disku through our different influences would feel like,” they say of their recording process, “and although inspired directly some of our favourite hidden gems from the past, the sound of this record remains unmistakably rooted in our present day where current influences from electronic genres, hip hop, jazz and psychedelia also shine through.”
On eight choice cuts Dar Disku pare and prune their influences into a broadly appealing bouquet primed to suit any celebratory times. Bookended by classy showcases of their sound designer chops in the radio-strafing scene setter ‘Leil’ and its balmy surf guitar/belly dance organ licks, and the dusky ambience of closer ‘Fajr’, they register sleekly sultry, symphonic Bollywood and Turkish psych references in ‘Alsutur’ and a standout of Raï’s fruity quarter-tone synth vamps and ’90s piano house groove in ‘Gaibi’, plus a HiNRG Bollywood disco banger in ‘Dbayli’, and some approximation of a West Asian Donna Summer/Moroder ace in ‘Baar Baar’. All as sweet as pre-sugar tax Rubicon.
