Out there in certain districts of the fickle blogging community Telepathe have been met with a backlash before they've even started. Having been touted as the latest in a long line of hip Brooklyn bands to steal everyone's hearts - largely thanks to the circulation of 'Chrome's On It' and 'Can't Stand It' - there seems to have been a small cloud of antipathy forming over the Telepathe gravy train of late. Perhaps it's the "produced by David Andrew Sitek"-fatigue that's doing it. The TV On The Radio star does seem to have taken up residence in broadsheet music columns over the past 12 months or so, and maybe that's enough to extinguish hype in some of the internet's more fashion-conscious corners. Regardless, the "I can feel the real bang-bang" refrain of 'Chrome's On It' remains addictive in all its absurdity and hyper-gloss production while 'Devil's Trident' shifts up a gear thanks to some stacked-up synths and brass contributions that may or may not have been made by some other member of TV On The Radio. Elsewhere, 'So Fine' could be a Glass Candy single, and 'In Your Line' drops some obscure rhythms to dissolve any potential usage of the term 'electropop'. It really is all very good, though there is always a slight concern that but for a few exceptions Telepathe's songwriting can't quite match their zeitgeist-capturing skills. 'Lights Go Down' compounds such suspicions: it's a jarringly tepid piece of pseudo-dubstep-lite, arriving midway through the album, bogging things down somewhat (it actually sounds a bit like a nightmare collaboration between High Places and Sean Paul). Yet immediately afterwards, 'Can't Stand It' arrives, instantly and completely seducing you all over again. The momentum is retained on 'Michael', which establishes a real sense of depth and sound-sculpting sophistication whilst maintaining its pop credentials. Recommended.
