Osaka/Berlin's Kouhei Matsunaga follows recent collaborations with Autechre's Sean Booth, MC Sensational, and Conrad Schnitzler, among others, to deliver the technoid intricacies of 'Dance Classics Vol.1', his debut for PAN. As NHK'Koyxen, he fluctuates between mercurial electronic slipperiness and concrete grooves learned from Hardcore Techno and Hip Hop disciplines. This work has found him a home on diverse labels such as Important Records, Skam and Raster Noton, who all share a yen for the kinetic potential of his tricksy, subtly unstable style. For PAN, he offers a collection of what might be his straightest, and dopest productions, focussing on music for the dancefloor and/or altered state reflection. Using advanced spatialisation techniques, coupled with an appreciation of structure perhaps inherited from his formative studies in architecture, Kouhei warps our perspective of conventional patterns in geometric 3D, resulting in a carefully detailed rendering of IDM tropes bound to be enjoyed by fans of Autechre, AFX, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Machinedrum et al. Highly recommended!
