The Abtomatic Miesterzinger Mambo Chic
Lynchian ether-dream rockabilly and surf styles, sung in Hebrew and english, from a beguiling and sorely overlooked character who appeared, and went, like a time traveller from the ’50s
Hailed as the “bastard love child of Elvis and Lux Interior”, Israeli guitarist Gabi Abudraham (1972-2016) assumed the Charlie Megira mantle for a classic sound and tuxedo + wraparound shades look that placed him well out of his time. Like some lonely rock troubadour from an unmade Lynch flick, he plied a sublime take on ‘50s trash tropes that’s both familiar and deeply uncanny, as previously found on Numero’s ’Tomorrow’s Gone’ compilation in 2019, and epitomised in this first reissue of his 2001 debut album.
Recorded at Charlie’s apartment on 4-track in 2000, ‘The Abtomatic Miesterzinger Mambo Chic’ sees Megira do his thing for, all intents and purposes, not many aside from himself. His CDr self-releases never got much further than Israel, with many now unreadable or adding to landfill, but what remains is a proper treat, shimmering in space somewhere between the original thing, its emulation in Lynch classics, and contemporary gems from likes of Cindy Lee, yet tempered by a feel of blazing white hot Mediterranean sun that makes everything feel very pleasingly bleached out and authentically vintage.
Kinda amazing.
