Boomkat Product Review:
Morgan Buckley and James Grünfeld’s Gombeen & Doygen duo lift up a leg and trample on a scuzzy dub-house skank for Dublin’s cultish Wah Wah Wino
Last spotted on the label’s opening gambit ‘Absolutely Wino’, the duo firm up a loping, rugged take on Berlin dub-house styles casting us back to the ‘00s styles of Deadbeat, Thomas Fehlmann, or Andreas Tilliander, but perhaps with a bit more muck under the nails, and funk in the gruds.
‘D’Americana’ stretches out on a bandy-legged strut up top, Grünfeld’s scuzzy vocals drizzled over an effortless but grubby skankers rhythum that smacks of Club-Mate and cheap weed from Görlitzer Park. Flipside, ‘Auto-Lies’ trots in a similar rut of dub-house toil, but smudging the vocals back in favour of chipping guitars and FX kinda like a ruder, ruggeder version of Mark Ernestus dubs.
