Boomkat Product Review:
Filed under "Psychology & Health” on the Folkways website, the sonorous drift of four trombones act like gentle waves lapping at the edge of a celestial shoreline on the opening to Craig Kupka’s 'Crystals: New Music for Relaxation 2’ - a stunning meditation tape that reminds us of work by Iasos and Steve Roach, or as the label describe it "healing music that opens the outer reaches of the mind.” what could be more apt right now?
Featuring two side-long compositions for bass and contrabass trombone; electric piano and synthesiser, the album was intended as an aid for meditation, a guided journey inward towards self-discovery. Before its original release in 1982, Kupka and his wife Nancy took these recordings to relaxation classes and dance studios, field-testing them with participants primed for a meditative experience, and received extensive feedback.
The vinyl edition is part of the Smithsonian Folkways Vinyl Reissue Series, bringing to light hidden gems from the extensive collection and revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released by the label. And we reckon this one’s up there with thbest and most treasured deep cuts in the extensive archive.
