Boomkat Product Review:
Charalambides’s Christina Carter and Gown’s Andrew Macgregor team up once more (they were heard recently on the very strange ‘We’ve’ album on Digitalis) for this peculiar record on the lovely Free Porcupine Society label. More accessible than their previous work, the two musicians weld lightly plucked electric guitar and of course their voices. Carter is already known for her haunting tones (she even appears on the new DJ Shadow album!) but it’s Macgregor who really surprises here, wailing and screaming and adding a special quality to the record which sets it apart from its avant-garde peers. I’m actually quite surprised at how penetrable this album is given the banshee-like otherworldly quality of the ‘We’ve’ album, but there are real moments of beauty to be found on ‘Crystal Thicket’ and parts which remind me of the matchless Grouper album (also on Free Porcupine Society strangely enough). Probably the best bit of non-Charalambides Christina Carter goodness for a very long time, ‘Crystal Thicket’ is well worth further investigation.
