Boomkat Product Review:
A fittingly wonderful tribute to much beloved cult songwriter Judee Sill, featuring contributions from Bill Callahan, Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen, Beth Orton, Final Fantasy, Meg Baird and Marissa Nadler among others. Sill only recorded two albums (her eponymous 1971 debut and Heart Food, released two years later) before sliding into drug-fuelled obscurity and an untimely death in 1979, yet her impact on singer-songwriters ever since has been profound, with contemporary acts like Fleet Foxes (alas absent from this collection) citing her as a major influence. There are some truly excellent realisations of Sill's music here, kicking off with Ron Sexsmith's outstanding take on 'Crayon Angels' and continuing with Frida Hyvonen's delicate version of the seminal 'Jesus Was A Crossmaker'. Elsewhere, Beth Orton proves to be an apt interpreter of 'Reach For The Sky', Daniel Rossen lays down typically sweet harmonies for 'Waterfall' and PG Six really nails 'Til Dreams Come True' with a terrific guitar arrangement. Highly recommended.
