Boomkat Product Review:
In the wake of Mild Vilnc’s ace Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe 12”, the Chicago label hands over to another local unit, Brain Case (90 Day Men) and Jeremy Lemos’ Acteurs for a dank session of studio-as-instrument post punk.
Corridor gives the first taste proper of Acteurs sound since their eponymous debut in 2014, ‘fessing a greater control over their shadowplay of instrumental echoes and pulses threaded in three parts by stoically blank-eyed., growling vocals that urge you to “listen to the voices in your head” and “trust no one” in no uncertain terms.
Why gives the 12” a stygian-slow start, with vocals coming in halfway thru that recall Iggy Pop and Alva Noto’s Leaves Of Grass, draining out into the downward descent of Gun and farther along the spine to the slopping thrust of Candy Canes like some Bruce Gilbert downer. Exu affords some more spacious respite, again with the Dome-like sound sphere hingeining on wide, immersive bass and distant kick drum, saving their most impressive and spirit consuming sounds for the desiccated wormhole dynamics of Arches on a very Kevin Drumm-styled tip.
