Richie Hawtin’s proof of minimalist concept from 1996 resurfaces with a bonus track for its 25th anniversary
Upon its original release ‘Concept 1 96 : 12’ marked a turning point in Hawtin’s oeuvre from hard and fast techno to an increasingly purified, fluid sort of minimalism. It came about as the result of a year more or less sequestered to his Windsor studio after being barred from entry to the USA, where he had established his name as a sort of para-auxiliary to the Detroit sound, just over the border from Windsor.
The material uncompromisingly reduced his sound to a form of supple motion that, with hindsight, paralleled actions from Rob Hood and thru to Basic Channel to Ø and Wolfgang Voigt across the Atlantic, and was initially issued as a subscription service, once a month or so, before it was collected as a CD and notorious 12 x 12” boxset.
This edition holds all A/B tracks from the 12”s plus a previously unreleased bonus track, amounting to a crucial piece of ‘90s techno R&D that would lay the ground for classic and inarguably game changing mixes such as ‘Decks, EFX & 909’ and ‘DE9 | Transitions’ and at least the next 20 years of techno’s minimal phase.
