Boomkat Product Review:
What a pleasant surprise. Pop/folk crossover heroine Beth Orton comes up with one of the early contenders for album of the year? How could this possibly happen? Well, let’s just say it might be due to the influence of a certain Jim O’Rourke who has generously produced and co-written this album with Ms. Orton (also getting regular collaborator and drumming legend Tim Barnes involved!). Coming across like Jim O’Rourke’s classic Insignificance embellished with Jon Brion’s jangley production this album is truly a marvel. Beth Orton’s voice itself appears now in a totally different light, cushioned by production which elevates the songs with beautiful understatement. Worried you might be making a mistake? Well skip straight to ‘Countenance’ which is one of the album’s clear standout tracks, led by a heartbreaking dulcimer chime that gets you in the gut every single time. Do not sleep on this, it really is a perfect collection of credible modern pop music, and will surely be an album you will hear a lot more about in the weeks and months to come.
