Boomkat Product Review:
An assortment of the celebrated US harpist’s compositions get compiled for this fine Ghostly-released accompaniment to last year’s celebrated Mary Lattimore LP, ‘At The Dam.’
Still basking in the plaudits of her Ghostly debut and third solo album, ‘At The Dam,’ recent LA transplant Mary Lattimore opens a veritable memory box with this collection of harp compositions. ‘Collected Pieces’ draws from an archive of recordings made between 2011 and 2016, whilst Lattimore was residing comfortably in Philadelphia, which have previously appeared online in one shape or form.
Though obviously originally composed and recorded with separate intentions in mind, Lattimore’s intimate mastery of the harp ensures there is a semblance of aural consistency throughout, meaning this collection takes on the feel of a genuine album. The range Lattimore can conjure with 47-string Lyon & Healy harp is startling, teasing extra emotion out through subtle processed electronics.
10-minute opener Wawa By The Ocean is Lattimore at her intricate best, breathlessly unfurling layer after plucked layer of melody, contrasting with the stark yet glistening drama of Bold Rides. Lattimore’s celestial harmonies intermingle wonderfully with her harp on We Just Found Out She Died, a touching ode to Twin Peaks actress Margaret ‘The Log Lady’ Lanterman, whilst It Was Late and We Watched the Motel Burn proves she is not averse to outright abstraction, submerging her delicate harp strokes beneath a blurry veneer of electronics.
