Boomkat Product Review:
Another insanely limited edition EP on Aussie experimental imprint Room40, this time we have another of minimal electronic music's heavyweights providing a piece - the unstoppable Oren Ambarchi. Probably best known for his shockingly developed and moving work for the Touch label, the Australian experimental guitarist has gone on to work with drone lords Sunn o))) and even release on their Southern Lord imprint. On 'Clockwork' however we have something quite removed from Ambarchi's other output, a performance with highly skilled percussionist Robbie Avanaim, which lends a frenetic backbone to Ambarchi's measured melodic experimentations. Dark drones bubble up over precise drumrolls and clangs and guitar smacks, hits and plucks create a gloomy, cinematic texture to rival even Deaf Center. Eventually the drumming is joined by almost Gamelan style instrumentation and the record moves into the territory of Rune Grammofon's Thomas Stronen as witnessed on his recent 'Pohlitz' album. These peculiarly melodic sounds create such an odd, unique sound it's easy to see why the two musicians names this piece 'Clockwork'; it sounds as if tin soldiers are moving in unison, fighting and marching before their tiny motors run out of power. An incredibly unusual and shockingly addictive piece of music, 'Clockwork' comes highly, highly recommended.
