Boomkat Product Review:
Nowt for 18 months and then two in one week, Acre is spoiling us right now with You Know / City for the revitalised Brainmath, coming hot on the heels of his electrifying remix of Letta’s Locked Up and ahead of a rumoured album for the P13 label.
Leading Manchester’s new wave of prism-warping producers alongside Turinn, Croww and Mikey Mike Steeel, Acre’s now really coming into his own with a salty, damaged sound, nimbly treading between the embers of IDM, musty garage lock-up and mongrel bass pop.
For us, You Know is the standout piece. Setting spatial parameters that induce eyes-in-back-of-‘ead, his glistening, jazzy harmonics and helium-processed vocal carry all the info in the upper registers with vertiginous effect, reserving the bass to tight dabs that swallow the ‘floor in the 2nd half, only held up by that vocal which itself becomes more disorienting, eye-spinningly stereoscopic by the track’s close.
Turn her over for City, a instrumental love note to his beloved FC, sure to become a real crowd favourite at the Etihad. Then again, maybe it’s a salty stroke of music box tang and ticking 2-step unravelling like some player piano dissolving in an acid bath. Either way it sounds like little else in circulation right now.
