Boomkat Product Review:
Arc is the duo of DiN label boss Ian Boddy and Mark Shreeve, and for this latest work these two analogue electronics hounds staged a concert at St. Mary's Church in Philadelphia late last year. The five lengthy tracks presented here were all captured live at this atmospheric venue and subsequently mixed and mastered in a suitably hi-fi fashion by Shreeve himself. The tone of the album feels very much in the spirit of the current fashion for all things kosmische and new-agey in the field of electronic music, although Arc's sound straddles past and future synth environments and never sounds exclusively retro. This is something that's been true of the DiN label for a while though, and perhaps the fact that they've stuck to their guns over all this time is starting to pay off, as the electronic music zeitgeist starts to synchronize with them. The music is divided into five lengthy pieces, with the first being the longest, calling upon creamy mellotron sounds, ominous/ridiculous ceremonial sounding chords and plenty of punchy, arpeggiating basslines. Yet more '70s styled Tangerine Dream-scapes crop up as the album unfolds, leading you towards the often gloriously OTT soloing of finale 'Falling Through To Rapture'.
