Boomkat Product Review:
I know everyone might bang on about Esben and the Witch sounding just like Zola Jesus or whoever else is painting their face and playing at goths this week, but this latest from Esben and the Witch really, really reminds me of Belly. From the instant vocal flourish to the discordant chorus, there’s something distinctly Tanya Donnelly about ‘Chorea’. That is until things get really weird in the twenty-minute long ‘Corridors Installation’, which sounds more like Cocteau Twins given the Justin Beiber treatment; super slow, super gaseous, super gorgeous. Just for kicks the band have included a remix from Mogwai, which surprisingly sees the Scottish lads throwing away their guitars and drums in favour of drum machines and synthesizers. This bit of blissful slow-core reminds me of the best elements of the current witch house/drag scene and the fantastic career defining ‘Kicking A Dead Pig’ remix album. Really good EP.
