Boomkat Product Review:
‘Charcoal’ is another pitch-perfect edition from the Serein label, lovingly put together by Aussie bloke Mark Dawson. Subtly assembled with sparing guitar, piano and vinyl crackle, Dawson has come up with a softly spoken gem of a record that sneaks up on you slowly, and breathes on the back of your neck. With echoes of Barry Adamson, Deaf Center and Donato Wharton, there is certainly a widescreen quality to ‘Charcoal’, but it’s not one that detracts from the deeply personal sound he has managed to place on wax. This feels like music that comes straight from the heart, and while everything is perfectly placed, its like reading a diary from another time entirely.
