Boomkat Product Review:
Manchester house and techno mainstay Means&3rd comes into his own on a tertiary 12” of hard-bitten machine funk that bares his production teeth with more menacing bite
Well known for shotting the latest club tackle form behind the Eastern Bloc counter, as well as DJing myriad Manc clubs, Means&3rd began self-issuing his music on Unveiled Nuance with the ‘thought Contortion EP’ in 2021, and followed thru with ‘Life’s Glorious Mosaic’ a year later. The four trax on ‘Character Ethic’ now push his production style into darker places, the jaggedly offset techno lag and shuddered metallic swang of ‘Hardship Repackaged as Growth’ betraying more grit in-the-mix, before ‘Countenance’ goes heads-down on a Detroit techno drive electrified with unruly synth noise.
The title tune pares back farther to a sort of subaquatic dark techno minimalism laced with coruscating vocoder, a la Terrence Dixon, and ‘Desperate & Relevant’ keeps it down there with a stealthily hypnotic, rolling pressure precipitating darkside neuro synths in a way recalling Marcus Intalex’s moodiest Trevino workouts.
