Boomkat Product Review:
Originally released on super limited lathe-cut vinyl, this full length album of droning bliss comes from My Cat is an Alien’s Roberto Opalio – Italy’s grand magus of experimental music. Hardly surprising then that across four lengthy improvisations Opalio uses space toys, toy piano, guitar and his own wavering vocal tones to create some truly beautiful way-out Euro-psych. What, did I just invent a new genre there? Sorry about that, but MCiaA do really seem to be out there on their own, and whatever the brothers turn their hand to seems to have its own sound, its own life –and that is in the end what makes them so popular (and collectible). As usual the pieces were recorded with no overdubs or outtakes, but the piece which gets me most excited is the fourth and final recording in which Opalio makes great use of his voice. Rather than merely relying on the pulsating sounds of broken laser guns and bowed strings, here Opalio sings (rather well I might add) and layers his vocals quite magnificently. I might compare it to Fursaxa or Inca Ore (pre Lemon Bear) but really, combined with the typical MCiaA sound, it is out there somewhere in space on its own. Beautiful, in a strange way – give it a closer look.
