Boomkat Product Review:
Quick at the heels of Vanessa Bedoret’s standout solo debut, the french artist links James Marrs for a darker turn of post-techno dream casting as Cryo Lab on ace label, Laura Lies In
Where Vanessa’s solo works tends to a fragile sort of chamber trip-pop, her work with James Marrs is more biased toward starker structures, yet still buoyed by her captivating vocal presence.
Bookended by a pair of noirish, sci-fi dramatic and hardcore instrumental entry/exit portals, the most vital data is contained in the EP’s fleshier middle. On ‘Might Just’ Vanessa’s soulful vocal cadence is found icily detached and sparingly set against hyaline electronic contours and padded subs for a sort of deserted space station hymnal effect, before ‘Next’ subtly dials up the jazzy flair of her vocal on a bed of ruggeder bass and reverberant synths like some sorta melted drill for smoky cybernoir jazz stages.
