Boomkat Product Review:
Nicolás Jaar and friends beckon us to luxuriate in ambient minimalism with a selection of solitary “caves” for contemplation, cooking, running, walking, or staring into middle distance
Working with lacunæ and negative space as a fundamental, artists including Laraaji, Lucrecia Dalt, Ana Quiroga, Sary Moussa, Will Epstein, Aho Ssan, and Marzio Zorio join Jaar in creating ‘A Compilation of Silences’, with all label profits from sales going to the Dongyu Gaatsi Ling Nunnery, where more than 100 nuns live, study, and practice.
In eight tracks ranging from 10 to 30 minutes in length, the artists each use as much silence as they see necessary, with some opting to hover around liminal tones, and others simply leaving a blank to be filled by whatever aleatoric occurring may happen in your own listening space. In its Cageian concept and execution, the results are as ephemeral as it gets, and a nice exercise in extended listening with quiet surprises awaiting the more patient types.
