Boomkat Product Review:
Recorded live at Yoshi's in San Francisco last year, Cats And Mice is a solo set by Throwing Muses star Kristin Hersh. The performance is presented as complete and unedited, finding Hersh delving not only into her own catalogue (from her 1994 solo debut, Hips And Makers right up to this year's forthcoming Crooked, with one or two Throwing Muses numbers thrown in along the way) but also the traditional American songbook, taking on Appalachian folk and murder ballads like opener 'Banks Of The Ohio'. This isn't your usual loner acoustic set (well, Hersh uses an electric guitar for a start), as underlined by unconventionally jagged material like 'Fortune', but at the same time, songs like 'Your Ghost' remind you just how great a songwriter - in anyone's terms - Hersh can be. The sound quality of the recording is clean and full-bodied, but the lack of editing ensures the sort of rawness you'd want from such a release - while also supplying plenty of digressions and on-stage banter.
