Canasta Mexicana de Rolas
Crackshot sidespins on dembow-driven club musick by Mexico City-via-Paris producer Ragazza XXI and guests DJ Fucci, irreal Veintiuno, Climate Collapse - a big tip to admirers of Kelman Duran, Florentino, Paul Marmota, Elysia Crampton
Hot on our radar since 2021 debut LP ‘La Flor de Jimulco’ for Promesses, and their subsequent compilations, Ragazza XXI now returns with a class bunch of collaborators in tow on ‘Canasta Mexicana de Rolas.’ Riddled with crafty, trippy sound design but always with a clear sight on the groove, Ragazza’s music represents radical ends of the prevailing Latin American sound, where its intricate rhythmic functions encounter psychedelic impressionism in a way that recalls the starry-eyed promise and purpose of early ‘90s UK AI techno-electronica, but is just as much tied to contemporary South and Central American club pressure, and its rich, syncretic heritage of indigenous, African, and Latin traditions.
The sloshing tresillo drum patterns and pads of opener ’01-800 ft. DJ Fucci’ dials in something like ‘Incunabula’ Æ-meets-Paul Marmota, and ‘Sonho BB ft. Marara Kelly’ twists the ‘floor by the hip on a killer quicksilver triplets like a tripped out Florentino. Fellow dembow innovator irreal Veintiuno ideally chimes in on the warped and haunted slow slugger ‘Deslave’, with chiasme lending dreamy, over-the-shoulder coos to the tarraxho-adjacent ace ‘La diff’, and Climate Collapse helps guide the closer’s stygian dembow momentum into abstract enigma and fuck knows where next.
A must check for modern rhythm fiends.
