C U Again EP
Pill belly trigger warning! The 2nd EP by Baltic angel Maria Minerva and Porridge Bullet chef Ajukaja returns to the fray nearly a decade later, still sounding fresh as a daisy for fans of sublimely skewed dream house
A necessary reminder of the sound that kicked off the whole lo-fi house thing, Ajukaja & Maria Minerva’s ‘C U Again EP’ (2014) depicts the style at its lushest, loosest and most effective over four tracks scaling from delirious dream-house to country-folk twang. It was originally one of the earliest numbers on the ace Porridge Bullet from their native Tallinn, Estonia, and emerged right around he point when Maria was also killing it with a slew of records for Not Not Fun and their 100% Silk sublabel, which would inspire everyone from Teresa Winter to Huerco S. The title tune is a total gem, marbled with Maria’s hair-kissing vocal and set to the slompiest psych-house groove, whilst ‘Bring Me Down’ tends to the flipside of that wave on a lip-smacking acidic beatdown flex, and ‘All The Heart Breaks’ gives it a proper 2nd wind of tuffer, jacking Chicago house blessed with a Billie Ray Martin-esque croon and melt-on-mind chords, before heading off on a whole other tangent with the spangled country-house strut of ‘Igav ja suva’.
