Boomkat Product Review:
Oh it's nice to finally have this back in stock - DJ Olive's first outing for the Australian Room 40 label and it's utterly essential. Clearly influenced by Philip Jeck and Christian Marclay among others, turntablist DJ Olive experimented on Buoy with drones, bass pulses and drifting samples, piecing them together expertly to create one long 60 minute masterwork. As with his latest work 'Sleep', Buoy was also created with relaxation and sleep in mind, on the liner notes we are instructed to listen to the album as quietly as possible and use it as some kind of sleeping pill. It's detailed and hugely involving if you give it the time it takes, and since I've had this record for quite some time now I can safely say it stands up to many many repeat listens. Comparable with Philip Jeck's classic '7', or William Basinski's 'Disintegration Loops' series, 'Buoy' is a perfect example of how experimental music can house within it a hardback book's worth of narrative and emotion. Essential!
